Commissioning a Portrait / Painting

I am available for commissions in any size and medium.  I have completed abstract works, landscapes, still life's, portraits and other works for clients on request. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a particular type of work painted or drawn and we can discuss your requirements.

Commissioning a portrait can often be a daunting prospect, the following guidelines should help smooth out this process and make the journey an enjoyable one.

  1. Initially feel free to contact me via this website. Depending on where you live we may be able to arrange to meet face to face to discuss your requirements. During this initial phase we can discuss the type of portrait you desire. For example:

    - Do you desire a natural or posed portrait?
    - What will the subject wear?
    - Do you desire a detailed background?
    - Exactly what size is the portrait to be, and where will it hang?

Answering such questions is the beginning of a successful portrait. At this initial stage we can decide on a schedule and location for the portrait sittings.
  2. Next we need to draw up a commission agreement which sets forth the details and conditions of the project and the amount of the deposit. Usually a third of the total cost is received at this time. A further third of the price is received when the portrait is 75 - 80 % complete and the last third is received by the artist on delivery of the final picture.

At this stage an overall price for the portrait will be agreed. Extra costs such as framing and shipping will also be included if necessary in the commission agreement.
As a special offer I can do a beautiful classic portrait - oil on canvas for as little as $750 (the paintings Levi, Karen Garner Abdul and Isabella are examples of this type of portrait . The size would be approximately 40cm x 50cm. Arrangements can be easily made of you desire multiple subjects on a larger canvas).
  3. The sitting will involve approximately one hour of photography. This may include a number of poses and clothing ensembles. The artist will bring his own photographer at this stage and may also make some sketches of his own.

Additional sittings may be required if the subject has specific requirements in composition.

The alternative to a photographic sitting is for me to work from quality photographs. I have successfully completed many portraits without meeting my subject, although personal contact is to be preferred. It is important that the selected photographs are representative of the person to be painted, and are of suitable quality to produce a good final picture.
  4. Following the sitting I will work on a number of drafts of the portrait until I find a desired composition. After the work is approximately 75% completed I will email or send you some photographs of the work in progress.
  5. Once the portrait is complete it can be delivered to you and final payment received. It is possible to arrange for professional framing of the work at this time if desired.
  6. Here are a few things to consider when commissioning a portrait.
